Universal, Global, International Worldwide Google Searching

A Google Universal Search, Google Global Search, Google International Search or Google Worldwide Search is one which produces results, from a Google Web Search query, that are not localized by the country in which we live.

The Google Universal Search is not to be confused with Google's introduction of a "Universal Search" system that blends listings from Google News, Google Video, Google Images, Google Local and Google Bookssearch results among those it gathers from crawling web pages.

When the majority of us undertake a Google Search we do so on our localized Google Homepage. Unfortunately, under those circumstances, we may only see those search results that best match the country to which our Google Homepage relates and in the language that Google associates with that country.

There are times, however, when it is advantageous to be able to view the Google Web Search query results that would be produced, as if they were not localized. Those individuals and companies that would benefit from a Google Universal Search, Google Global Search, Google International Search or Google Worldwide Search are:

  • Businesses that wish to check that their website shows up in a good position on Google universal, global, international, worldwide search results page.

  • Web content providers that wish to check that their website shows up in a good position on Google universal, global, international, worldwide search results page.

  • Web researchers that wish to obtain universal, global, international, worldwide web search results for their Google Web Search query.

  • Ex-pats that wish to obtain universal, global, international, worldwide web search results for their Google Web Search query or those for the USA which seems to be the closest approximation to a universal, global, international, worldwide Google Search Engine.

  • Polyglots, multilingual or bilingual surfers that want to obtain universal, global, international, worldwide web search results that are not limited to a single language or the language associated with the Google-determined local country language.

For the first three there could be a requirement that is not universal, global, international, worldwide but for a single country other than the local home country. This requirement is discussed in Google :: Search Country Change Google.

For the last two there could be a requirement to change the default language, either for the local home country or for the universal, global, international, worldwideGoogle Search Page. This requirement is discussed in Google :: Search Language Change Google.

Google Search Results Around The World

Google Universal Search, Google Global Search, Google International Search, Google Worldwide Search: What's The Difference?

There is no difference between Universal Search Google, Global Search Google, International Search GoogleandWorldwide Search Google. They are all an explanation of the requirement to have Google Web Search results that have not been filtered by local country criteria or Google geotargeting. Google geographic targetingis done by matching your IP address with a location from an IP-to-Location database.

Google Inc., in its wisdom, has endeavoured to make Google Web Search results relevant and universally, globally, internationally accessible worldwide. This relevance is not just from a content point of view, but also from a location and language point of view (the Google search interface is offered in many languages Google::Google Language Search::Languages).

If you live in the United States you will not necessarily be aware that google.com automatically redirects to the local domain of the surfer – google.co.uk for Google UK, google.com.au for Google Australia, google.ca for Google Canada, google.ie for Google Ireland, google.co.in for Google India, google.co.nz for Google New Zealand and so on (a full list of Google TLD's can be found at Google::Google Top Level Domains::Google TLDs). These Google local domains show custom-tailored Google Web Search results for that location and Google-determined location language.

In general, where the local language is English and web-content development is well established, this is not usually a constraint. However, for the reasons listed above, and especially where the surfer lives in a country that does not have an established presence in terms of web content, the relevance of returned Google Web Search results can be diminished. It would seem that location overrides Google ranking relevance and high rankings are achieved because there is a Google location language override on search results.

Google Universal Search, Google Global Search, GooHow Is A Universal, Global, International, Worldwide Google Search Achieved?

A universal, international, worldwide, global Google Search is achieved by accessing the google.com homepage or switching off the Google geotargeting. This is easy you say. All I need to do is type in Http://www.google.com/ into the address bar of my web browser. Try it! The chances are that, if google.com is not your local Google Homepage, then you will be redirected automatically to your local Google Homepage again.

So, how do we get to a worldwide, universal, global, international Google Search?

There are some methods that can be utilised to override the automatic redirection, bypass Google localized searchand access the standard version of Google Web Search:

  1. If you usually browse in English then, at the bottom right hand side of your Google Homepage, click on “Go to Google.com”. This will take you to the English version of the standard Google Homepage.
  2. If you prefer, you can type “google.com/ncr("ncr" = No Country Redirection) in the address bar of your browser. When you use this option the Google cookie will override your current preference and save this new preference. It effectively switches off the Google geotargeting. The next time you access google.com you will not be redirected to your local version.
  3. Google Advanced Search (Google Advanced Search in English- http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en) by clicking on “Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more “ and then choosing the country from the drop-down list accessed from the down-arrow next to “Region” - choose “any region” or perhaps “United States”. You can change the language here also.
  4. You can obtain Google Web Search results from an alternative location by adding or changing the “gl” parameter of the URL, for examplehttp://google.com/search?q=google&gl=usorhttp://google.com/search?q=google&gl=uk
  5. You can access GoogleTheGlobe and click on the US flag (or a limited set of other Google County Web Search options.
  6. If you use the Firefox browser you can upload the Mozilla Google Global extension (the URL for the download page is at the.bottom of this article).

Google Universal Search, Google Global Search, Google International Search, Google Worldwide Search Not In English

Once you have arrived at the English version of an international, global, universal, worldwide Google Search Homepage you can undertake non-English language Google Search queries in the following ways:

  • Google Advanced Search - by choosing the language from the drop-down list accessed from the down-arrow next to “Language”. You can choose a specific language or “any language”. If you want to see the Google Advanced Search options in a language other than English then change the “hl=en” of http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en to the two letter international code for the language, for example http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=es for Spanish or http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=he for Hebrew and so on.

  • You can obtain Google Web Search results for an alternative language by adding the “hl” parameter to the URL, for example http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=us&hl=es for Spanish or http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=us&hl=he for Hebrew and so on. And if you want to do this universally, globally, internationally, worldwide with Google then just leave out the “&gl=us” parameter, for example http://google.com/search?q=google&hl=de for German or http://google.com/search?q=google&hl=yi for Yiddish (once you have accessed google.com Homepage).
