Google Netherlands (Google Nederland, Google Holland, www.google.nl) is the Google search engine for Holland, based on the classic homepage. Here you can do keyword phrase, image, video, maps, news and book searches, localized for the Netherlands.

Google Netherlands is available in Dutch. It is also possible to see the classic search page in languages that are not Dutch (Nederlands), by adding an alternative ISO639-2 language code at the end of the Google webhp URL stub: 'http://www.google.nl/webwp?hl='.

Apart from Dutch (~15m), there are significant populations within Holland that speak Frisian (~500k), Indonesian (300k), Turkish (~200k), Papiamentu (80k), Chinese (70k), Malay (45k), Arabic (30k), Vietnamese (16k), and Tamil (~7k). Dutch speakers also have significant capabilities in other languages such as English, German and French. Netherlands Google has 'Nederland' under the 'le' of Google. If you search in English you will see 'Google.com in English', as below. Otherwise, you will see 'Google.com in [your language]'.

You can get to Google Nederland as follows:

1. Type 'http://www.google.nl/'.

2. Do a search for 'Google Netherlands', or 'Google Holland', to access it in Dutch.

3. For the English version enter 'http://www.google.nl/webhp?hl=en' in the web browser URL entry box.

4. Adding the ISO3166 country code 'nl' to the “gl” parameter will give Dutch search results: 'http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=nl'.

5. 'http://www.google.nl/intl/nl/', redirects to Google Netherlands in Dutch 'http://www.google.nl/intl/en/', redirects to Google Argentina in English.

When you Google 'Netherlands', 'The Netherlands', 'Holland', or 'Nederland', the sort of articles you receive as search results are established information sites, such as Wikipedia, World Factbook and Netherlands government tourism sites, but they will be different for each different search name you enter.

The Netherlands (population ~16m) is a Kingdom, the government of which is a constitutional monarchy. It is located in north-east Europe, across The Channel, to the east of the United Kingdom. It has a North Sea coast and is bordered by Belgium and Germany. It is a member of the European Union, with the Euro as it's currency.

Holland is a low-lying country with over 25% being below sea level. A large amount of the 15.75 thousand square miles of land, that makes up Holland, has been reclaimed from the sea, by the Dutch, such as the Ijsselmeer. The Netherlands has a cool temperate climate, with mild winters and cool summers.

Agriculture and horticulture are major industries, being highly mechanised. Much produce is cultivated under glass, such as salad vegetables, fruit and vegetables. Other industries, mainly manufacturing, include chemical, machinery, petroleum, refining, metallurgy and electrical engineering. It is a major exporter of petroleum products.

The main port of Holland, Rotterdam, is the world's largest port. The capital is Amsterdam, with the seat of government at The Hague. Other major cities include Utrecht and Eindhoven. The predominant religions are Roman Catholic, Dutch reformed church, and Calvinism.

2. Video's – enter a search term to find related video's. Video's are from YouTube.

3. Maps – enter a search term to find a map.

4. Nieuws (News) – enter a subject for a news item in which you are interested. The resultant news will have a Netherlands bias.

5. Boeken (Bookshop) – enter a search phrase to find the book you require.

Your search “query” is transferred from previous Google search boxes, to the one in which you are now interested.

The top left-hand side of Google Nederlands homepage also has a [meer] (more) link. Here you will find Vertalen (Translate), Scholar, Blogs, Realtime, YouTube, Agenda (Calendar), Foto's (Picasaweb), Documenten (Docs), Reader, Sites, Discussiegroepen (Groups).

You can access "Google Taalhulpmiddelen" (Language tools), and "Geavanceerd zoeken" (Advanced search), to the right of the Google Netherlands search entry box.

Below the Google Holland search box there is the 'Ik doe een gok' (I'm Feeling Lucky) button, and information about Google advertising programs (Advertentieprogramma's), business solutions (Bedrijjfsoplossingen) and 'About Google' (Alles over Google).

Changing the language code from 'nl', for example:

to another ISO639-2 language code, will give you Google NL in that alternative language.

For instance, for English ('en'), the URL becomes:

http://www.google.nl/webhp?hl=en

allowing you to view Netherlands Google in English.

Once upon a time you could limit your search results to a local country, or to the local language. Google no longer facilitates this useful function. This means it is now more difficult for businesses to undertake competition analysis, locally.

There is an alternative: Firefox Google search, for the Netherlands. This facilitates these functions, and businesses can undertake local business analysis by limiting results to local Netherlands results.

Using the Firefox URL:

gives Netherlands results in Dutch. This URL works with any browser (a screenshot of the webpage is shown below).

When on the Firefox page ensure the Doorzoek (Search) 'pagina's in het Nederlands' or 'pagina's uit Nederland' button is set, instead of Doorzoek 'het internet' button.

Using this URL will give you either pages written in Dutch, or Netherlands pages, according to which button you set.
