Google Italy (Google Italia, www.google.it) is a search engine for Italy, based on the classic homepage from Google. Keyword phrase, image, video, maps, news and book searches, localized for Italy, are available.

Google Italy comes in Italian. If you want to see the search page in a language other than Italian (Italiano), then add an alternative ISO639-2 language code to the Google IT webhp URL stub: 'http://www.google.it/webwp?hl='.

Apart from Italian (55m), there are significant populations within Italy that speak German (including Bavarian, ~250k), French (100k), Slovene (100k), Albanian (80k), Somali (50k), Chinese (40k), English (~30k), Maltese (~30k), Catalan (20k), and Greek (20k). Italian speakers include those that have regional language capabilities, such as Emiliano-Romagnolo, Friulian, Ladin, Ligurian, Lombardic, Napolitano, Occitan, Piedmontese, Sardinian, Sicilian, and Venetian. Italy Google has 'Italia' under the 'le' of Google. Searching in English will give you 'Google.com in English', as below. Otherwise, 'Google.com in [your language]' will be shown.

You can get to Google Italia as follows:

1. Type 'http://www.google.it/'.

2. Do a search for 'Google Italy', or 'Google Italia', to access it in Italian.

3. An English version is available by entering 'http://www.google.it/webhp?hl=en' in the web browser URL entry box.

4. If you add the ISO3166 country code 'it' to the “gl” parameter you will get Italian search results: 'http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=it'.

5. Enter 'http://www.google.it/intl/it/', to redirect to Google Italy in Italian; 'http://www.google.it/intl/en/', redirects to Google Italy in English.

When you Google 'Italy' or 'Italia', the top page 1 search results you receive are those for information sites, such as Wikipedia, Italian government tourism sites, Lonely Planet, and World Factbook. These give most of the information you may need concerning Italy.

Italy (population ~58m) became a republic in 1946. It is located in southern Europe. It comprises a long peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean, and two main islands of Sicily (to the south) and Sardinia (to the west). The total area of Italy is around 116k square miles. It is a member of the European Union, with the Euro as it's currency.

The Alps form the northern border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. The Adriatic sea to the east separates Italy from Albania and former Yugoslavian states: Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Montenegro. The Apennine mountain range runs down the middle of the peninsula, forming a backbone. The Po valley lies between the Alps and the Apennines. This forms a great fertile lowland area. Sicily and Sardinia are largely mountainous.

A lot of Italy is geologically unstable, with four active volcanoes (Etna, Vesuvius, Stromboli, and Vulcano). It enjoys warm dry summers and mild winters (with snow in the mountains, however).

The north is the main industrial area, with motor vehicle, textile, clothing, leather good, glass, and ceramic manufacturers. There is also an important agricultural industry which is generally well mechanised, with the farms in the south being small and traditional. An active tourist industry (an important foreign currency earner) is maintained throughout the year, due in part to the climate, and in part to the outstanding historical monuments of Ancient Rome, and also from the Renaissance.

Rome is the capital, with other major cities being Milan, Naples, Turin, Genoa and Palermo. The religion is unsurprisingly Roman Catholic.

1. Imagini (Images search) – find images by entering a search term. Related search terms are offered for you to choose from.

2. Video – find related video's by entering a search term. These are YouTube videos.

3. Maps – find a map by entering a search term.

4. News – find a news item by entering the item in which you are interested. The resultant news will have an Italian bias.

5. Libri (Bookshop) – find the book you require by entering a search term.

The search “query” you enter is transferred from one Google search box to another.

The top left-hand side of Google Italia homepage also has a [altro] (more) link. Here you will find Traduttore (Translate), Scholar, Blog, In tempo reale (Realtime), YouTube, Calendar, Foto (Picasaweb), Documenti (Docs), Reader, Sites, Gruppi (Groups).

To the right hand side of the Google Italy search entry box you can access "Strumenti per le lingue" (Language tools), and "Ricerca avanzala" (Advanced search).

Below the Google Italy search box you can access the 'Mi sento fortunato' (I'm Feeling Lucky) button, and information about Google advertising programs (Pubblicità), business solutions (Soluzioni Aziendali) and 'About Google' (Tutto su Google).

Change the language code from 'it', for example:

• http://www.google.it/webhp?hl=it

to another ISO639-2 language code, to show Google IT in that alternative language.

For instance, for English ('en'), the URL becomes:

• http://www.google.it/webhp?hl=en

allowing you to view Italy Google in English.

All of the Google supported languages, with their ISO639-2 language code, are given below, after 'comments'.

Once you could limit search to obtain local country, or local language, search results. This facility is no longer available. Businesses are now no longer able to undertake competition analysis, locally, using Google (Yahoo local does facilitate this requirement..

For Google there is an alternative: Firefox Google search, for Italy. With this, businesses can undertake local business analysis, by limiting the search to obtain local Italian results.

Using the Firefox URL:

• http://www.google.it/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:it-IT:official

gives Italy results in Italian. This URL works with any browser (see the screenshot below).

When on the Firefox page ensure the Cerca (Search) 'pagine in Italiano ' or 'pagine provenienti da: Italia ' button is set, instead of Cerca 'nel Web' button.

You will get either pages written in Italian, or Italy pages, determined by which button you set.
