Gold Weights and Measures
Gold is usually measured in ounces troy or metric units and the basic conversions in Table 1 may be helpful. There you will also find a few examples of weights that are used in other trading centres like Hong Kong, India and the Middle East, and Thailand. Each of these trading centres has gold trading traditions going back in history way before Europeans got in on the act.
Baht - (บาท = Thai) a Thai unit of weight of about 14.6 grams. Thai baht gold bars.
Chi - (Vietnam) a Vietnamese unit of weight. 1 chi = 3.75g.
Don - (Korean) South Korean measurement of gold weight.
Grain - a sub-unit of the avoirdupois weight measurement system equivalent to 1/480 of a troy ounce (0.0648 grams)..
Gram - an internationally accepted measure of small quantities of gold, of the metric system. It is equivalent to nnn troy ounces
Kilogram - 1,000 grams, equivalent to nnn troy ounces. This is the internationally accepted measure of larger quantities of gold. 1,000 kilograms equals 1 metric tonne (mt).
Mesghal - (پثسلاشم; Farsi) weight measurement for gold in Iran. It is the equivalent of 4.6 to 4.7 grams.
Metric tonne (metric ton, mt) - equal to 1,000 kilograms. This is the internationally accepted measure for quantities of gold, especially gold bullion, greater than 1,000 kilograms in weight.
Pennyweight (dwt) - a sub-unit of the avoirdupois weight measurement system equal to 24 grains or 1/20 troy ounce (1.555 grams).
Tael (两 = chinese simp.; 兩 = chinese trad.; liǎng = pinyin) is a Far East measure of weight A tael can weigh anything between 1.18 and 1.2 troy ounces, the equivant to about 37 to 40 grams. Tael gold bar.
Tola (तोलक = Sanskrit; तोला = Hindi; تولا = Urdu; tolā, tolaka) is a south Asian unit of mass. One Tola is the equivalent of 180 troy grains, 0.375 ounces troy. or 11.664 grams. It was traditionally the weight of 100 ratti seeds. One tola coins were produced originally because they were a convenient size and weight.
Troy ounce - an internationally accepted measure of weight for gold. A troy ounce is an avoirdupois measure. It approximates to nnn grams.

Gold Bar Weights
Gold bars are made by gold bar manufacturers. They record the manufacturer name, weight and purity on each gold bar. Gold bars are sold at a low premium over the prevailing gold price. There is a large range of gold bars available to purchase internationally.
Gold bars range from 10g (some 'bars' are from 1g or less), .to 1250g (12.5kg, 400 oz) maximum for commercial trade. Larger gold bars are produced as consolidation bars at gold mining operations to ease transportation. These are supplied to refineries for refining to 999.99 parts per 1,000 or thereabouts. They are then cast into standard size gold bars.
Tables 2, 3 and 4 show a comparison of some gold bar sizes converted to grams for ease of sorting. This is not a comprehensive list.
You will note mention of minted bars there. The consensus of opinion is that Argor-Heraeus (ch) was the first (1952) accredited refiner, worldwide, to issue a range of minted bars. Now a number of accredited manufacturers produce minted bars in grammes and / or ounces.
Minted gold bar weights range from 0.3 g to 500 g, and from 1/10 oz to 20 oz. The world’s largest minted bars: the 20 oz and 500 g are manufactured by Johnson Matthey (ca).

- Gold Alloys :: Gold Alloy :: Gold Mixtures
Gold Alloys are pure gold mixed with silver, copper, zinc. Gold alloy production give colour, strength, hardness, ductility. Gold alloys with aluminium, nickel, palladium also. Formulating gold alloys is very challenging. Too much of one precious metal can cause the combination to become fragile, hard and will prove difficult to design jewellery. Another combination of precious metal may cause the alloy to become too soft for jewellery fabrication. All gold alloy have different - 20 months ago
- White Gold :: Low Copper Content Gold Jewelry : Karat (k) of White Gold : Palladium, Nickel
White gold is not a special form of gold. White gold is a true carat gold, just like yellow or red carat gold jewellery. They are gold alloys that look white rather than yellow. Apart from copper, all other alloying metals to gold will tend to whiten the colour and so it is possible to make carat golds that are white in colour. White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually nickel, manganese or palladium. Like yellow gold, the purity of white gold is given in karat (carat). - 20 months ago
- Green Gold :: Green Gold Alloy :: Green Gold Jewelry :: Green Gold Jewellery
Green gold not really green. Green gold subtle greenish yellow. Green gold from gold-silver alloy. Green gold has less copper in alloy. Green gold normally appears as a very subtle, greenish yellow tint rather than what we would normally call green. Blending of silver and pure gold produces the colour tone found in green gold and that we call green gold alloy. Green gold alloy is made by reducing the copper content from an alloy mixture and using just gold and silver. Green gold was known to Lyd - 20 months ago
- Gold Standard History :: Gold Bullion Standard: UK, US
The Gold Standard history dates back to 1717. Historically the Gold Standard meant the Bank of England was legally required to exchange paper money for a fixed weight of gold. The history of the Gold Standard changed to that of the Gold Bullion Standard in 1925 when the Bank of England was merely required to buy and sell gold at a fixed price. The mantle of stability passed to the US in 1934 and lasted until 1971. - 18 months ago

Very useful on Gold Weights - my experience is limited to COMEX and EFP and jewelry for my wife :) Very interesting the different Gold Fix Centers
I will be publishing a hub to include information about each of the bars that have been on the market - did not quite make it to the 60DC2 though.
I had no idea that there were so many different measures of weight for gold..

The different weights and measures for gold make it an interesting subject on its own.
