Google Austria (Google Österreich, www.google.at) is a Google search engine for Austria. It is adapted from the classic Google homepage. Localized Austrian keyword phrase, image, video, maps, news and book searches are supported.

Google Austria is written in German. The classic search page can be seen in languages other than German (Deutsch), by adding a different ISO639-2 language code to the Google webhp URL stub: 'http://www.google.at/webwp?hl='.

German (8m) is the main language, with Bavarian, Swiss German and Walser being included in the number of German speakers. Immigrant and border languages include Turkish (~70k), Polish (~40k), Hungarian (25k), Kurdish (~25k), Croatian (20k), Slovene (~20k), French (15k), Greek (12k), and Czech (~10k). Austria Google has 'Österreich' under the 'le' of Google. There is a link to Google.com from this search page. Localized English searchers will see 'Google.com in English', as below. Otherwise, 'Google.com in [your language]' will be shown.

Getting to Google Austria can be achieved, as follows:

1. Type 'http://www.google.at/'.

2. Enter the search query 'Google Austria', or 'Google Osterreich', to get to it in German.

3. If you want the English version, you can get it by entering 'http://www.google.at/webhp?hl=en' in the URL entry box of your web browser.

4. Adding the ISO3166 country code for Austria ('at') to the “gl” parameter will give you Austrian search results: 'http://google.com/search?q=google&gl=at'.

5. Enter 'http://www.google.at/intl/de/', which redirects to Google Austria in German; 'http://www.google.at/intl/en/', redirects to Google Austria in English.

Google 'Austria' or 'Osterreich', and the top search results you get are: Google media real-time results for Twitter and Facebook; and major sites, such as Wikipedia, and Austrian official sites. These give most of the information you may need concerning Austria.

Austria (population ~8m) is a landlocked federal republic in Central Europe, surrounded by 7 nations: Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, to the west; Czech Republic to the north; Slovenia to the south; and Slovakia and Hungary to the east. The dominant features of Austria are the Alps mountain range in the west, and the Danube river basin in the east. The total area of Austria is just over 32k square miles. It is a member of the European Union, with the Euro as it's currency.

The summers are warm, attracting tourists to walk in the forests and mountains. The winters are cold, attracting skiers to the 50+ ski resorts. Tourism is thus a major income generator for Austria. Other contributors to GDP are dairy products and produce from the forests.

Vienna (Wien) is the capital: other major cities being Graz, Linz and Salzburg. The religion is predominantly Roman Catholic.

The top left-hand side of Google Österreich homepage also has a [Mehr] (more) link. Here there is Übersetzer (Translate), Scholar, Blogs, Echtzeit (Realtime), Kalender (Calendar), Fotos (Picasaweb), Text & Tabellen (Docs), Reader, Sites, and Groups.

To the right of the Google Austria search entry box there is "Sprachtools" (Language tools), and "Erweiterte Suche" (Advanced search).

Below the Google AT search box there is 'Auf gut Glück!' (I'm Feeling Lucky) button, and information about advertising programs (Werben mit Google), and 'About Google' (Über Google).

By changing the language code from 'de' in the Google at webhp URL stub:

• http://www.google.at/webhp?hl=de

to another ISO639-2 language code, gives Google AT in that other language.

For English ('en'), the URL becomes:

• http://www.google.at/webhp?hl=en

which shows Austria Google in English.

There was a time when you could limit search results to those for the local country, or local language. Google, in their wisdom, got rid of this functionality. As a business searcher you are no longer able to do competition analysis, locally, using Google ('Yahoo local' does give you this facility).

An alternative is to use a Firefox Google search, for Austria. Using this allows businesses to get knowledge about local Austrian businesses.

Use the Firefox URL:

to get Austrian search results in German. This URL works with any browser (see the screenshot below).

When on the Firefox page ensure the Suche : (Search) 'Seiten auf Deutsch' (sites in German) or 'Seiten aus Österreich' (sites from Austria) button is set, instead of Suche : 'Das Web' button.

You will get either pages written in German, or Austrian pages, according to which button you set.
